Programme Highlights
The pursuit for greener buildings and sustainable urban living spaces has become one of the major considerations on the development of property or the selection of leasing premises. In Hong Kong, a systematic and holistic approach to assess the green elements and sustainability of buildings, i.e. BEAM, was established over 14 years. On 20 November 2009, a new 2009 version of BEAM, called BEAM Plus, was introduced for assessment and certification of green buildings. One version of BEAM Plus EB covers existing buildings, and the other BEAM Plus NB covers new buildings. During the talk, the participants will be briefed of the latest development and trend of green buildings as well as the introduction to new requirements of the BEAM Plus assessment on new buildings and existing buildings.

International Conference on Total Air Quality Management - A Competence Enhancement and Development Program for Professional - 08 May 2008

The deteriorating air quality in Hong Kong has become a major public concern in recent years.  People got increasingly convinced that the role of Hong Kong as a regional financial and business hub may be compromised if remedial actions are not taken fast.

In view of the seriousness of the problem, both the HKSAR Government and PRD Authorities are committed to improving air quality in the Region by implementing whatever technological, administrative, and regulatory measures that are appropriate.  This creates a very favourable environment for related business to flourish.

With the anticipated increase in the demand for professional air quality management services, it is very important that environmental and associated professionals, if they are to benefit from the situation, have a firm to-to-date grasp of the subject.

Pilot Project on Cleaner Production Technical Support for Hong Kong-Owned Factories in Pearl River Delta Region – Successful Experience  - 22 April 2008

Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of HKSAR Government commissioned Hong Kong Productivity Council to implement a pilot project on cleaner production (CP) technical support for Hong Kong-owned factories in PRD Region to help them start to implement cleaner production practices in their factories. The project lasts for one year and consists of three phases. In Phase I HKPC visited 15 factories and conduct preliminary cleaner production assessment for them to identify potential CP measures. In Phase 2 four out of the 14 factories were selected for actual implementation of several cost-effective CP measures. HKPC acted as consultant in designing these CP measures for the factories. In Phase 3 these 4 factories invested to implement the CP measures with HKPC acting as their consultant to assist in implementation and subsequent evaluation of the performance of these CP measures. Guidebooks on CP practices for the three industries/industrial processes to which the four factories belong were compiled in order to share the CP implementation experience with the industries. Through this pilot technical support project, factories appreciated the benefits of CP practices and were more willing to adopt these practices as a means of reducing pollutant emissions, conserving energy and resources, as well as improving production efficiency. This seminar summarizes the experience of the pilot project.

Regional Bioenergy System For Increasing Renewable Energy Utilisation and Mitigating Climate Change - 27 February 2008

Biomass is a locally available renewable energy source that can provide electricity, heat and power, and liquid, gas or solid-derived fuels.  It, thus contribute to the substitution of imported fossil fuels and to diversification of energy sources, and hence strengthening overall national energy security.  As a low carbon or carbon-neutral source of energy biofuel systems with low energy inputs into the production process are already significantly contributing to climate change mitigation by replacing fossil fuels, and through carbon sequestration of bioenergy system with CO2 capture and storage, exploitation of currently untapped by-products and the establishment of energy plantations, and use of energy crops have been especially interesting and significant topics for R&D of bioenergy systems.  This lecture is to give an overview of R&D in bioenergy technologies with the emphasis of regional energy system that has been developed in Sweden as a successful example.  On-going research in this area has also been discussed and addressed.
